Profile key
tool.web_search.description

Searches the web for one query and brings the results into the conversation.

The conversation's Search provider, under Conversation settings → Advanced tools, decides what comes back. With Native, the model's own provider searches and returns a written report with the sites it used. With a provider from Settings → Providers → Search providers, Mework searches and returns titles, URLs and text. Setup is on Web search and fetch.

Limits

A search provider returns 5 results and at most 2,000 tokens by default (Result count and Result compression on Advanced tools). Native ignores both.

Good to know

  • Once a search has run with Native, the conversation keeps it. Claude Agent, OpenAI Chat Completions and OpenAI Compatible models have no native search, so nothing is fixed there and you can choose a provider at any time.
  • If the chosen provider is not set up or stops working, searches fail with an error the model can pass on to you.
