tool.web_fetch.description
Fetches up to 20 web pages by URL and brings their text into the conversation.
The model has it whenever the conversation's Fetch provider (Conversation settings → Advanced tools) is not Off; with Native, only on Anthropic Messages and AWS Bedrock models. Setup is on Web search and fetch.
When it asks you
One card lists every URL in the call.
Limits
- fetch, the provider that runs on your computer, takes at most 4 MiB and 30 seconds per page. It runs no JavaScript, so a page that builds itself in the browser can come back empty.
- All pages in a call share the Result compression budget, 2,000 tokens by default; 0 keeps pages whole. Native is not cut.
Good to know
- fetch refuses private and local addresses, except a local address the model names directly at Full access, such as your dev server. Redirects into your local network and links taken from search results are always refused.
- If the chosen provider is not set up or stops working, the model still has
web_fetch, and fetches fail with an error the model can pass on to you.
